![]() About two months after this I received a second bite near the first. The oval welt is an inch across and shows no sign of going away. A minor infection did result from this bite. I suspect that this occurred at home, though since you do not feel the bite it could have been anywhere. I was bitten last Summer just above the beltline. The toxins injected are quite damaging to tissue, and infections are a frequent result. You don't notice the bite of these spiders until an ugly welt appears. They haven't received the same attention as the brown recluse or black widows, but probably will as time goes.Īnybody have any stories about seeing these critters hiking? Or bitten by one? Here's a pic of this little gal I found. These spiders were brought to the US in the 1920's or 1930's from Europe, arriving in Seattle. Instead, the bites were coming from hobos. In fact, people in the northwest have complained of recluse bites since 1980, even though they don't live in this area. The hobo's bite is identical to that of the brown recluse. In any case, this was very interesting to me to read about this creature. However, given the variations that can occur with all three of these spiders, experts assert that the only way to be absolutely, definatively certain is to view the reproductive organs under a microscope! They recommend you treat any spider of this grouping as potentially dangerous. Given the size, patterns, colors, size, location, etc.this one could very well be a female hobo. There is also a fourth, that is often found higher up. So far I've learned that there are three spiders that look quite similar, and in fact are very closely related - the common house spider, the giant house spider, and the hobo or aggressive house spider. Upon researching it however, I think I could have come across a hobo spider. ![]() Instead I was at work and looking through a box that had been collecting dust. Well, I wasn't exactly hiking when I found this little gal today. ![]()
